Journalists and mass communicators must be expeditiously mobilised and educated on everything about NEPAD, so that they will, in turn. educate and inform the rest of the society. At present, the concept of NEPAD is only being mouthed in government circles, making it look like one more diplomatic gimmick, good on paper, but up to no good to the people.
Herein then lies the significance of this workshop. It is my hope that African governments must see the need now to make the media partners in this development effort. The overall objective is to enable media practitioners serve out their role as interpreters. They will effectively distill matters concerning NEPAD to the bare essentials, particularly in our largely unenlightened society, and increasingly complex world.
The media could become the instrument of African governments, for the propagation of NEPAD objectives. This way through careful information management, the government would effectively market NEPAD as both an idea and an objective for the people to adopt.
