Nigeria’s foreign policy in the last fifty years had been focused on the eradication of colonialism, apartheid and all forms of racism on the African Continent; upholding the dignity of black men everywhere; and the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and self-sufficiency of African states.
While Nigeria’s leadership in championing African issues in the global sphere has been commendable, the international environment had changed significantly in the last fifty years. Accordingly, Nigeria and Africa’s challenges have also evolved.
Although some of the old issues are still pertinent, new pressing issues have come to the fore and Nigeria must adjust its foreign policy to meet these new challenges.
This book is a compilation of speeches and papers presented at a seminar to review Nigeria’s foreign policy organized by the Presidential Advisory Council on International Relations and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 2011.
Various Nigerian foreign policy stakeholders, including practitioners, scholars, and commentators scrutinized Nigeria’s foreign policy, since independence in order to assess its suitability for the country’s current and future challenges.
