A Pictorial History of The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs: Origin, Legacies, and Renaissance

The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) founded October 1 3, 1961 to promote the scientific study of politics, economics, law and strategic studies is a foremost research and policy think-tank whose activities have directly and indirectly impacted positively on Nigeria’s foreign relations and governance.

Indeed, history indicates that the development of the Institute largely reflects the character and growth of Nigeria’s foreign policy and international relations. It therefore, enioys a privileged position in its relations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The evolution and development of the Institute had through the years been associated with the roles played by several countries and individuals as we will see in this Pictorial History of the Institute.  Nationalists, Heads of States and Presidents from all over the world, international personalities, ministers/Ambassadors, religious leaders, renowned academics, labour leaders, journalists and students amongst other categories of individuals have all, at one time or another, graced the inviting and world famous research grounds of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

They therefore, became part of the rich history of service and excellence for which the Institute is known. This volume attempts to capture this history in pictures dating back from the inception of the Institute to the present, hoping that the reader will derive immense pleasure from the perusal of the rich content of his book; which reminds us all of our political past, efforts, legacies and achievements.

It is our expectation that this book will serve to further motivate Nigerians towards a renaissance, as we strive for service and excellence for our fatherland. For the NIIA, the renaissance has already begun as it re-positions as a foremost centre of excellence and informed policy, contributing to foreign policy and Nigeria’s political development.
